CHAPTER 8

Murdock shifted his foot from the accelerator to the brake pedal and turned off the highway, bringing the truck and trailer to a halt in front of the massive stone gate Scarface had described.

Beside the gate were a keypad and a camera.

Murdock lowered his window and pressed the button on the keypad.

A voice sounded from an intercom affixed to the keypad. “State your name and purpose.”

Murdock’s lips twisted. Technology allowed humans to be cold and impersonal.

“Dr. Gabbie Myers and her fiancé, Sean Murdock. Our purpose is to deliver a prize black stallion.”

“Proceed,” the disembodied voice said.

The wrought iron gate slid sideways.

Murdock drove through the entrance and followed the paved road beneath an arch of overhanging trees.

The trees’ branches grew so closely together they blocked the natural light, giving off the gloomy feeling of dusk.

“It’s beautiful.” Gabbie shivered. “And creepy.”

The road climbed the side of a hill. As they neared the top, the line of trees overhanging the road ended, and the land leveled off in a sprawling plateau with a backdrop of high mountain peaks.

Rising in the middle of the plateau stood a massive, ultra-modern mansion with square corners, two-story windows and views to take your breath away.

“This guy can easily afford a $100,000 horse,” Murdock said.

“I wonder how he makes the kind of money that can afford a place like this,” Gabbie said.

A young man dressed in black and wearing sunglasses waved at them, directing them to follow him in a tricked-out side-by-side ATV. He led them along a road that swung wide around the house to the stables several hundred yards behind the house. Surrounded by lush green pastures, the stable was as much of an architectural delight as the ultra-modern house.

Murdock pulled in front of the building and shifted into park. The man in black climbed out of the ATV and waited for Murdock and Gabbie to join him at the stable doors.

“Welcome to Cloud Base,” the man said. “Please wait here. Mr. Williams will be with you momentarily.” He turned and entered the stables, closing the door behind him.

Murdock glanced at Gabbie. “I’m ready to get this done and get the hell out of here.”

She nodded. “Me, too. Let’s do this.”

The door in front of them opened, and a man wearing English riding attire stepped out.

He smiled and strode toward them. “Wonderful. I’ve been waiting for you to arrive. I thought you’d be earlier.” He held out his hand to Gabbie first. “I’m Rayne Williams. You must be Dr. Myers.”

She shook his hand. “I am.”

“Thank you for taking the time to deliver Lucifer personally. I feel better knowing my horses have the very best of care during transport.” He turned to Murdock with one eyebrow cocked.

“Mr. Williams,” Gabbie waved a hand toward Murdock. “This is my…fiancé, Sean Murdock. He agreed to come along for the drive to keep me company.”

Williams gripped his hand in a firm shake, meeting and holding his gaze. “I’m glad you had company. It’s always nice to have backup on any trip.
